Cape Wrath Coast

Fire & Blood

Cape Wrath Coast was the Stormlands shoreline targeted by Morion Martell in the Fourth Dornish War. It was the promised threshold of his invasion: the place where a fleet meant to avenge Dornish humiliation would begin its assault, and where the aftermath instead marked the failure of that ambition.

A Shore Named as a Target

Morion planned to cross the Sea of Dorne and strike the Stormlands by sea rather than approach through the Prince’s Pass. He intended to land as far as Storm’s End, or at least at Cape Wrath. His threat to burn a hundred towns and raze a hundred castles made the coast a symbol in his campaign of revenge, though the account observes that Cape Wrath had not even a third that number of towns and castles.

The Invasion That Never Landed

Morion assembled his forces at Ghost Hill and the Tor, then loaded them aboard ships gathered with help from pirates of the Stepstone Isles, sellsails from Myr, and corsairs from the Pepper Coast. The expedition’s destination was known before it sailed: Jaehaerys I Targaryen had learned of the plan six months in advance, and Boremund Baratheon was waiting at Cape Wrath for the Dornish landing.

The waiting proved decisive in a different way. As Morion’s fleet crossed the Sea of Dorne, Jaehaerys and his sons sent Vermithor, Caraxes, and Vhagar against it. The ships were destroyed by dragonfire, and none of the Dornish forces reached the Stormlands alive. Cape Wrath Coast remained an intended landing place, not the site of a land battle.

The Coast After the Defeat

For half a year, the remains of the burned fleet’s dead washed onto Cape Wrath. The detail gives the coast a role in the war’s aftermath as well as in Morion’s plans: the shore received the evidence of an invasion stopped before it began. The Fourth Dornish War was decided in a single day, without a Dornish landing on the Stormlands coast.
